Consultation has concluded

The City of Abbotsford is upgrading traffic signals and crosswalks at 4 key intersections to further control and prioritize traffic and to upgrade existing pedestrian crossings. The four locations are:

  • Marshall Road/Old Yale Road
  • Blue Jay Street/Blueridge Drive
  • McKee Road/McKinley Drive
  • McMillan Road/Mila Street

This project will provide many benefits to the community and neighbourhoods, including:

  • Enhancing road user safety by reducing collision potential and frequency at the noted intersections with full traffic signal and improved pavement marking layout.
  • Enhancing vehicular and bicycle mobility through the roadway corridor
  • Enhancing roadway corridor safety by introducing LED street lights and rapid flashing beacons
  • Enhancing sightlines by improving the roadway geometry

The contractor of this project is Crown Contracting Ltd.

At one point in the old Yale road future plans the city wanted to reduce old Yale from 4 lanes back to two lanes to address Speeding, bike lanes, and parking. If this was the case the city does have room for a single lane roundabout at old Yale and Marshall. What isn’t this being considered over traffic lights. Old Yale road has turned i to a speedway and needs to be reduced back down to 2 lane traffic

Thank you for your input. The City has to consider the rate at which development occurs and traffic growth in all its future plans. Roundabouts require a fairly unique set of conditions to function efficiently some of which are balanced approach volumes, low pedestrian volumes, and a fairly low total entering volume in the case of a single lane roundabout. Having considered all of the above coupled with the growth in cyclists using these routes, a roundabout is not the ideal solution for this intersection.

This improvement is much needed at the Mckinley Drive and McKee Road intersection. During school hours and peak commuting hours it can really be backed up and hard to turn. The safety of the students walking to and from school needs to be a top priority. Thank you for taking steps towards this long overdue update :-)

Per the Official Community Plan that prioritizes active transportation and transit, why are cycling buttons, etc., not included in the new Marshall and Foy intersection? When will this be addressed?

Ross_Brown asked almost 3 years ago

Cycling push buttons are provided on the minor approaches only. In this case Foy Street has been provided with a cyclist push button.

Will sidewalks be added in between Marshall and St. Moritz on Old Yale Road. It’s super dangerous right now

Paul asked almost 3 years ago

Yes a new study is underway looking into providing infrastructure for vulnerable road users along Old Yale Road.

I live close to the Old Yale and Marshall Road intersection. I regularly see cars on both roads travelling at an extremely high rate of speed and the only thing that slows traffic down temporarily is the 4-way stop (although I have also witnessed traffic not stopping at all on a number of occasions). Once the new lights are installed, I can see that cars approaching a green light will not reduce their speed and may in fact increase it to get through the light. I think that the traffic lights could well make a bad situation worse. I see in other comments that a roundabout is not an option for this intersection which is a shame. The city needs to find a way to reduce the speed of traffic in this area.

Re: McKinley and McKee On the diagram, where it says 'new sidewalk' in front of '3441' - is it being pushed back to make more room for the left turn onto McKee, or simply being replaced where it is currently after work is done?

sarytinker asked almost 3 years ago

The curb, gutter and sidewalk are being replaced as the road grade/vertical profile is being adjusted through the intersection.

Will street parking along McKinley on the south side be lost?

sarytinker asked almost 3 years ago

Street parking will be prohibited as left turn lanes are being added to

    McKinley Drive.

Will the lights at Blueridge/Blue Jay be on a rotating timed cycle or will they be predominantly green for Blueridge traffic with activation loops for Blue Jay traffic?

Gordon Bates asked about 3 years ago

Thank you for your question. Blueridge Drive will receive priority and therefore the signal will generally be green for traffic along Blueridge Drive.

As a citizen living on McKinley Drive with a son that attends Prince Charles I would like to say a massive THANK YOU for upgrading Mckinley Drive and McKee Road intersection with better traffic signals and crosswalks. The congestion is huge during the morning, mid afternoon and evening rush so this is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
