Stages 1 and 2 (completed in 2021/2022), identified several key outcomes which informed the development of the draft Arena Strategy (Stage 3/underway), including:

  • The inventory of arenas within the City of Abbotsford, including City and privately owned arenas, are at, or nearing maximum capacity during peak seasons (Fall, Winter and Spring) making it challenging for user groups and the community to increase their activity.
  • The community demand for arena activities is expected to increase over the next 20-years. It is projected that the community will require 1 additional ice sheet and 1 additional dry floor space to meet the demand (assuming all existing arenas remain operational).
  • The MRC and MSA arena are nearing the end of their useful life span. Significant investment will be required to extend their lifespan to meet the long-term community demand.

The need for maintaining the current inventory of arenas and additional future arena facilities is clearly identified within the analysis, however, there are several other factors that require exploration prior to any development. The draft strategy presents 9 actions (below) to ensure the City has the information they need to make informed decisions related to arena facilities.
