Sumas-Delair Bikeway Project
The City of Abbotsford is looking to expand the City’s cycling network by constructing a new AAA (all ages and abilities) bikeway along Delair Road from Sumas Way to Delair Park.
The proposed Delair Road Bikeway includes the following improvements:
- Protected bi-directional bikeway on Delair Road from Sumas Way to Delair Park
- Pedestrian activated Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacon (RRFB) crosswalk on Delair Road near Griffiths Road
- Pedestrian Crosswalks at Ackerman Court, Spencer Street, Rockwell Lane, and Rockwell Drive
- Expansion of walking facilities including new multi-use pathway and sidewalk segments on Delair Road
- Traffic calming measures on Delair Road by reallocating wide pavement widths to discourage speeding and utilizing a complete streets approach
- Transit accommodation through new bus stop locations and provided amenities

Transit Stops: Benches, Shelters, Crosswalks and Racks
Benches and bike racks at transit stops that are accessible must be a minimum requirement along this project's subject area. To achieve a mode shift from cars (e.g., lowering economic input costs for better GDP performance and quality of life), broadening the appeal of transit and active transportation together is essential. The transit stops need crosswalks to access from the north side of Delair. Eastbound transit stop IDs: 107394: Bench / No shelter / curb 107395: No bench / No shelter 107396: No bench / No shelter / Not accessible (Image) 107397: Bench / No shelter / Curb 107398: Bench / No shelter / Curb 107399: No bench / No shelter Stops with curbs are not directly accessible from the north side of Delair. Bicycle Repair Stand
Include commercially available municipal bicycle repair stands at amenity locations (as mentioned for water stops), Marshall / Sumas, and Delair Park. City of Chilliwack provides these, as do many other municipalities and regional districts. These should also be retroactively added to the Parkview-Tims-Charlotte corridor at the junction by the million dollar city hall surface parking lot, as they were originally intended, but omitted during construction.

Flat crossings at islands / porkchops
See the recent construction at Cardinal / Mt Lehman. Flat crossings mean less chance of people on wheeled mobility devices / vehicles rolling off small or cramped porkchops and a smoother ride. However, use hard edged curbs rather than rounded curbs.

Cyclist Signals
Abbotsford should really join other cities like Vancouver and Victoria by adding a dedicated cyclist signal for cyclist crossings. Regular pedestrian signals aren’t really the best for cyclists.

Clear lane identification for Delair Rd by Griffiths
Delair Rd near Griffiths is always a nightmare to drive. Cars constantly using the wrong lane, using lanes as an extension of the drivethrough. The center line needs to be more clearly defined with delineators. Even better would be to have Griffiths into a "Right Turn Only" and block access to Delair Eastbound.
