The City of Abbotsford is planning to construct a new picnic shelter in Swensson Park. The new shelter will complement the existing park amenities and will support small gatherings and events in the park year round, by providing picnic tables, shade and weather protection. Construction of the new shelter is anticipated for Spring 2024. The park will remain open to the public during construction.

Update: Shelter Location

After receiving significant neighbourhoood feedback through two stages of consultation, and after fully considering the individual opportunities and constraints of each location, Option A on the east side of the park has been selected for the location of the new shelter.

This decision is consistent with the majority sentiment of those who participated through the engagement process and also provides the city with opportunity to position the shelter in a location that allows the greatest separation and screening from adjacent residents. Furthermore, Option A does not require the removal of existing trees and will also allow the City to enhance an otherwise underused area of the park by reducing some of the hard surfacing, increasing the amount of functional open space for passive recreation uses, improving the landscaping and providing additional tree planting.

OPTION A – CAMBIE STREET / EAST SIDE

  1. Direct pathway access to the shelter will be from Cambie Street
  2. The shelter will be visible from Cambie Street and all other areas of the park
  3. The existing circular play space and surplus asphalt will be replaced with grassy open space, seating and picnic table(s)
  4. The pathways next to the shelter will be modified
  5. Additional trees will be planted in the open space are around the park entrance area
  6. Additional landscape beds will be planted

Consultation is now closed. Thank you for your input!
