Over the past number of years, residents along Windsor Street have expressed concerns regarding road safety and traffic along Windsor Street. Community concerns have centered on speeding, truck traffic, traffic noise, pedestrian crossings, and the overall "look and feel" of Windsor Street.

The City is reviewing traffic calming options to address these concerns.

Speed humps are not being considered as a traffic calming measure on Windsor Street for the following reasons:

• Speed humps generally increase the amount of noise generated by traffic through vehicle braking, suspension rattling as the vehicle passes over the speed hump, or in the case of trucks with loads, noise is greatly increased.
  • Some drivers may choose not to slow down for the speed hump or table.
  • Some drivers may slow down, but then speed up to make up for their perceived loss of time.
• Windsor Street is an Urban Industrial classification street. According to the City of Abbotsford Traffic Calming Policy, only local classification streets are eligible for speed bumps and other vertical deflection measures. This means that we need to consider other traffic calming tools along Windsor Street.

This project will be designed to the latest accessibility standards to provide equitable access for people of all ages and abilities. This may include but is not limited to the following accessibility upgrades:

• Accessible curb ramps for people with varying abilities and mobility devices.
• Marked pedestrian crossings.
• Improved pedestrian waiting areas on the intersection corners to accommodate people with varying abilities and mobility devices.
• Curb extensions to reduced pedestrian crossing distance across Windsor Street and improve visibility between pedestrians and motorists.
• Tactile walking surface indicators at all curb ramps.

• Roadway narrowing induces slower speeds of drivers which makes overall traffic safer for all road users, especially those walking, cycling, or rolling.

This project is not anticipated to significantly impact transit and transit users.
