CityStudio Inspired - The Story of the Project Journey (by Jasnoor Sodhi, Work-Study student)
This CityStudio Inspired is supported by UFV's Centre for Experiential and Career Education (CECE).

Collaboration

In the Winter 2021 Semester, Jasnoor Singh Sodhi, a CIS Major, was hired as a Work-Study student in the role of Website Designer and Event assistant. Part of his work experience included shadowing the GEOG 344 course to tell a story of student engagement and instructor-student collaboration.

Real-live Civic Challenges

Jasnoor comments: “I was lucky enough to be a part of GEOG 344 class and experience the learning. This year was a little different because everything was done online, but I enjoyed the students' and professor's participation in the course, and I am excited to share my experience with GEOG 344. Under the guidance of Dr. Afia Zubait Raja, the GEOG 344 Urban Planning course focused on certain interesting challenges and solutions. I took part in the discussion groups, Online Presentations and Virtual meets with the Professor. Along with the students enrolled in the class, I have had a chance to learn about the challenges that the City is facing such as housing needs, Child Care support organizations’ inventory, and community development. There were also discussions about the local by-laws and the Official Community Plan.”

Community Impact

Jasnoor observes further: “The students in the class were very interested and came up with a range of questions, answers, and suggestions that could change the community. After this course students would be able to develop their planning, analysing, critical thinking, and policy formulation skills. Dr. Afia Zubait Raja's commitment to addressing questions and inspiring students toward a stronger future was admirable.”

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Dr. Afia Zubait Raja offered the following description of the CityStudio challenge that her class tackled and its importance: “Through the GEOG 344 Urban Development Project for Abbotsford, we are targeting the overall UFV goal of Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity. Planning for all segments of population in the area is well aligned with the Official Community Plan and will help channelize City's efforts towards a sustainable future.”

Students as Ambassadors for Experiential Learning

The project shadowing is the new feature of CityStudio Abbotsford. In Winter 2021, it has been facilitated through the Work-Study program at UFV. Going forward, project shadowing could become an assignment-based activity for the students in relevant disciplines.
