Marshall Road Corridor Improvements

The City of Abbotsford has completed a study of the Marshall Road corridor between Sumas Way and Timberlane Drive. The Marshall Road corridor is an important east-west corridor in the City of Abbotsford with connections to Sumas Way (Highway 11), Old Yale Road, and Whatcom Road. The corridor will be experiencing changes in the future from new development and road network connections.

The purpose of the study was to determine a design for improvements along the corridor. Initially the study identified improvements for each corridor user, which includes pedestrians, cyclists, transit, and motorists. Based on feedback collected during the study, the City has produced the attached concept design for the corridor. The design includes improvements for pedestrians by installing new sidewalk and crosswalk connections, cyclists by providing a new bi-directional cycling path along the north side of Marshall Road, and for transit users by enhancing the bus stop at Everett Road.

This concept design has been fully deigned by an engineering consultant and is being constructed from McMillan Road to Old Yale Road starting in Fall 2023. Please expect traffic disruptions on Marshall Road as new infrastructure is built and road markings are changed. Construction will be complete in Spring 2024, weather permitting. If you have any questions about the project or the construction activities, please contact Aaron Klemets at 604-504-4041 or aklemets@abbotsford.ca.

Below is a summary of the results of the corridor study:

To improve the future corridor for pedestrian users this is what we heard:

  • More crosswalks between McMillan Road and Old Yale Road
  • More controlled (actuated) crosswalks
  • New sidewalk connection on south side between McCorkell Drive and Munroe Avenue

To improve the future corridor for pedestrian users this is how we are responding:

  • Pedestrian crossings with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) at Everett Road and Munroe Avenue
  • Signalized pedestrian crossing between Guilford Drive and Griffiths Road.*
  • New sidewalk on south side between McCorkell Drive and Munroe Avenue

*At the time of future development on Marshall Road and Eleanor Avenue

To improve the future corridor for cyclist’s users this is what we heard:

  • Protected bike facility along the entire corridor
  • Increased safety measures for cyclists

To improve the future corridor for cyclist’s users this is how we are responding:

  • Protected multi-use pathway facility between Sumas Way and McMillan Road*
  • Protected bi-directional bike facility between McMillan Road and Old Yale Road
  • Cyclist safety measures as follows:
    • Conflict area pavement marking at transition areas
    • Flexible delineator posts for protected bi-directional facility
    • Design integration with bus stops
    • Mitigated parking conflicts with bike facility

*At the time of future development on Marshall Road

To improve the future corridor for transit users this is what we heard:

  • More efficient transit routes
  • Bus stop access seamless with pedestrian and cyclist accommodation
  • More bus stop amenities

To improve the future corridor for transit users this is how we are responding:

  • Bus stop modifications and consolidation in westbound (Eleanor Ave, Sierra Pl, Sandstone Dr, and Camden Ct) & eastbound (Filuk Pl, Sierra Pl) directions based on ridership activity and transit design standards.
  • Bus stop design integrated with pedestrian and cyclists.
  • Amenities to be provided at all transit stops including tactile warning strips and garbage bins. Benches to be provided at bus stops where space permits.

To improve the future corridor for motorists on Marshall Road between Sumas Way and McMillan Road this is what we heard:

  • Additional westbound lane at Griffiths Road
  • Difficulty turning left at Eleanor Avenue, Guilford Drive and Griffiths Road
  • Improve pavement markings at McMillan Road intersection

To improve the future corridor for motorists on Marshall Road between Sumas Way and McMillan Road this is how we are responding:

  • Dual left-lanes at Sumas Way (Highway 11) and Marshall Road*
  • Dedicated left-turn lanes and median at Eleanor Avenue, Guilford Drive, and Griffiths Road*
  • Marked eastbound left-turn and westbound right-turn lanes at McMillan Road intersection

*At the time of future development on Marshall Road

To improve the future corridor for motorists on Marshall Road between McMillan Road and Old Yale Road this is what we heard:

  • Improve pavement markings
  • Maintain and add more on-street parking
  • Limited sightlines at Everett Road intersection
  • Traffic calming

To improve the future corridor for motorists on Marshall Road between McMillan Road and Old Yale Road this is how we are responding:

  • Clear pavement markings for bike lanes, travel lanes, and parking
  • Existing parking maintained and additional parking accommodated on south side of Marshall Road
  • Everett Road intersection curb bulges for improved sightlines
  • Narrower travel lanes, clear pavement markings, curb bulges, and overall complete street design for transit and cyclists to facilitate traffic calming.
