Background

Windsor Street is a two-way two-lane Urban Industrial classified road in the western area of the City of Abbotsford. Windsor Street connects road users to residential, educational, and light industrial areas and land uses. Transit currently operates along a section of Windsor Street. Current travel patterns indicate that Windsor Street is currently used by a variety of road users including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, vehicles, and truck traffic.

Over the past number of years, residents along Windsor Street have expressed concerns regarding road safety and traffic. Community concerns have centered on speeding, truck traffic, traffic noise, pedestrian crossings, and the overall "look and feel" of Windsor Street.

City of Abbotsford Transportation and Transit Master Plan

In 2018, the City of Abbotsford Transportation and Transit Master Plan was developed to guide strategy, actions, and investments in developing our overall transportation network through 2040. The Windsor Street Traffic Calming project seeks to support the following goals of the City of Abbotsford Transportation and Transit Master Plan:

  • Make walking, biking and transit delightful
  • Move people and goods in a way that is safe, accessible and equitable and that supports the City’s economy
  • Ensure all modes provide connections to important destinations and areas of future growth and development
  • Ensure that the transportation system supports land use decisions
  • Design streets to be complete destinations that support walking, biking and social interactions
  • Ensure that the transportation system is well-maintained
  • Plan and prepare for changes to the transportation system from emerging technologies

We're reviewing traffic calming options along Windsor Street.

The City of Abbotsford is reviewing traffic calming solutions along Windsor Street. The purpose of this project is to reduce vehicle speeds, discourage truck traffic, and improve safety and comfort for all road users: pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and drivers.

    What we are proposing

The proposed potential improvements along the along the corridor include the following:

    • Traffic calming measures:
      • Curb extensions
      • Corner radii reduction
      • Roadway narrowing
    • Pavement markings and signage.

The proposed potential upgrades aim to improve transportation accessibility, connectivity, equity, mobility, safety, and sustainability by:

    • Curb extensions to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and improve visibility between pedestrians and motorists.
    • Corner radii reduction to reduce turning vehicle speeds and discourage truck traffic.
    • Roadway narrowing to reduce overall vehicle operating speeds and discourage truck traffic.

We want to hear from you!

This phase of engagement focuses on sharing information about the proposed improvements and receiving feedback on the project.
