Plan for 2050: Shaping Abbotsford’s Future

The City of Abbotsford has launched Plan for 2050, a coordinated update of key service and infrastructure Master Plans to support and accommodate the growth and vision set out in our updated Official Community Plan (OCP), which was adopted by Council in December 2025.

Throughout the process, Plan for 2050 will provide multiple opportunities for the community to participate and provide input into how Abbotsford will grow, evolve, and thrive over the coming decades, ensuring that future operations, development, infrastructure, services, amenities, and programs align with the direction set out in the OCP and Council’s Strategic Plan.

Why Plan for 2050 Matters

The OCP sets the vision for how Abbotsford will grow and develop into the future. Plan for 2050 turns that vision into action by aligning City services and programs set out in each departmental Master Plan under one clear framework. In this way, the City can make informed, connected decisions that support sustainable growth, resilient infrastructure, vibrant neighbourhoods, and quality services for residents, today and into the future.

The following Master Plans will be updated in Plan 2050:

Plan 2050 City Water Plan 2050 Joint Water Plan 2050 Transportation Plan 2050 Drainage Plan 2050 City Wastewater Plan 2050 Joint Wastewater Plan 2050 Fire Rescue Service Plan 2050 Parks, Recreation and Culture

What’s Happening Next:

Throughout 2026 and 2027, the City will be gathering feedback to inform updates to our existing Master Plans. This work will ensure that long-term planning aligns with the priorities outlined in the updated OCP, Council’s Strategic Plan and community input, creating a cohesive and consistent roadmap for Abbotsford toward 2050.

Plan for 2050 is about planning ahead, working together, and creating a city that continues to be a great place to live, work, and grow, now and for generations to come.

  • Share There is a lot of talk about expanding bike lanes in the city. I have yet to see someone use the new (and expensive) dedicated bike lane on Marshall between Old Yale and Sumas Highway. Instead of so much money going toward expanding bike lanes why are we not talking about making the hospital bigger or making another hospital? Our current hospital cannot seem to handle to population we have. As well, I didn’t see any mention of expanded recreational facilities. Thank you for sharing your feedback. We understand that healthcare capacity and access to recreational facilities are important concerns for many residents as Abbotsford continues to grow.

Hospitals and healthcare services are overseen and funded by the Province of British Columbia through Fraser Health, and local governments do not have authority over hospital expansion or the construction of new hospitals. As healthcare falls within the jurisdiction of the BC Government, you may want to reach out to your local MLA as well as the Minister of Health, Josie Osbourne, directly as she is the elected official responsible for this service.

With respect to recreation facilities, the City recognizes the importance of planning for future recreational needs. The City is currently developing strategies for aquatics services and facilities, arenas, and sport courts and fields to help identify how recreation infrastructure can be expanded and enhanced to support our growing community. Once these strategies are complete, work will begin on updating the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan in 2027.

Regarding bike lanes, transportation infrastructure investments are intended to support a range of travel options, improve safety for all road users, and help accommodate future growth in the community. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to seek input from the community on the transportation infrastructure that is important to residents as part of our Transportation Master Plan.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your comments and concerns.
